O.K., I'll actually be playing as well so it won't all just be female vocalists, but it will be a night with dynamite female performances. Read on for details...

You asked for it (and asked for it, and asked for it...), and here it is. Mary Kautzer and I will share the stage at Costello's this evening. For those who don't know, Mary is a wonderful vocalist who has known me since I was just a wee one. She's probably the first person I ever watched play an acoustic guitar. We'll be doing a set with lots of harmonies, and Mary on her 12 string guitar.

Fara Tucker has become quite the draw in the past year, and tonight will be another evening worth checking out. Fara and I have been growing our set list, and tonight she'll perform a full set as opposed to just "sitting in for a few." Again, you asked for it, and here it is!

As usual, you may want to arrive early for seats. Some nights it's standing room only toward the middle of the evening. This is one not to be missed.

Dan Weber and Curt Siffert will be in the house again.  For those who don't know Dan (http://www.myspace.com/highway142), he's a cowboy, a poet, an outlaw, and a gentleman. He's also an Award winning songwriter who will give us a healthy dose of his acoustic Americana. Curt Siffert (http://curtsiffert.com/) has become a recent favorite of mine, and if I could have him at all of my gigs I would. He's a songwriter and pianist, and is working on a new CD that will be available soon.

The last couple of times that we've had a line-up like this at Costello's, it's been standing room only at times during the evening. It may be worth getting there by 7:30. Don't miss this stellar line-up!

This evening, we'll welcome a couple of newcomers to the line-up, Rich “Waggs” Waggoner & Jerry Towell. These fellas certainly aren't new to songwriting and performing, but it will be their first time at Costello's. If you're a fan of strong songwriting, and some Amos Lee, John Prine, and Todd Snider throw in to boot, you'll want to make sure you come out to see them pickin' and singin'. As Waggs and Jerry like to say, "We believe music can connect folks in a positive way! Our motto - 'The music is magic'." In the meantime, head on over to http://www.myspace.com/waggsra for a preview!

Another newcomer to Costello's this evening is songwriter Steve Rodin (http://www.steverodin.com/home.html and http://www.myspace.com/steverodin). Steve and I know each other from around town, and seem to tread in similar musical circles. He gigs both with a band and alone, and will be releasing a solo album this summer. With influences like Stephen Stills, Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, The Lovin' Spoonful, Talking Heads, Bob Dylan, Jim Croce, and Bonnie Raitt, you're sure to hear some tunes that you'll enjoy.

Last, but not least, Chris Romans will join us again at Costello's to make sure that we get our poetry fix for the evening.

Another great line-up, at fan-favorite Costello's. What's not to like? =)

Another evening at fan favorite Costello's. Dan Weber (http://www.myspace.com/highway142) will join the fun again. Last time we played to a packed house, and I've had some requests to do a repeat of the event. See you there! =)

And, just added, pianist and songwriter Curt Siffert will do another fabulous set during the evening. I enjoyed his playing so much in December, that I twisted his arm to join again in January. If you missed Curt because of the December ice storm, here's a chance to catch what you missed. In the meantime, have a listen and look at: http://curtsiffert.com/. There's even some video footage of the Costello's show.

Wow! More great news. Oft-requested songstress Fara Tucker will also perform a set during the evening. And, teen poet sensation Chris Romans will come out to share his observations on life, love, school, and the universe.

All in all, a night not to be missed, and a great way to jump start the New Year!

Award winning songwriter Dan Weber will join the evening with his acoustic country and Americana. For those who don't know Dan, he's a cowboy, a poet, an outlaw, and a gentleman. He's also one heck of a songwriter, and will be coming to us fresh on the heels of a trip to participate and perform at the Sisters Folk Festival.

What a great evening. Between Dan Weber, Fara Tucker, and I, we packed the house. No seats were to be found for about an hour of the show, and folks lined the walls or stood in the back of Costello's. I had a great time accompanying Fara's marvelous vocals as usual, and really dug playing some lead guitar with Dan's songs. I'm ready for a repeat. =)

Dan may be debuting some new material, so don't miss out. And, just added to the bill, Salem Songwriter Matt Price. Matt recently won PSA's "Road to the Bite" competition, beating out lots of local talent and securing a spot at last summer's Bite. Check out his videos at
www.myspace.com/matthewpriceband. Should be quite an evening. We haven't gotten the three of us in one place since last year's Salem gig (which was actually the night that Matt's videos were filmed).

Wow, wow, wow! I can't sing Jessica Stiles praises enough. She played this gig on the heels of her new CD and a trip to Nashville. I haven't been this excited about purchasing a CD in ages. After constant rotation in my car, I've just loaned Jessica's CD to my mother. I think that I'm already having withdrawls. Check out her CD at http://cdbaby.com/cd/stilesjessica.

I'll be joined by fellow singer-songwriter Chris Margolin. Chris and I did some gigging and recording together six or so years ago. He found me online recently, and we both agreed that it would be good to share the stage again. You can check Chris out at: http://www.myspace.com/chrismargolin
Here's a bit about Chris:
Chris Margolin has spent more than a decade building his name in the Portland music scene. His first band, Jealous Rage, gained national attention in 1999 by coming in 3rd place in Billboard Magazine's Best Unsigned Band Contest and playing more than 300 shows in less than 3 years. After Jealous Rage, Margolin attended Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon and graduated in 2003 with degrees in English Literature, Creative Writing, and in 2004 with a Masters in Education. In 2002, Margolin and former Jealous Rage drummer, Jason Lusk, formed Camorra. That band rose to quick success in Portland, Oregon, bringing in constant crowds over their four years together. After short tenures fronting End of Kings and Dead Echo, he decided to begin a career as a solo artist.

Margolin's sound has earned comparisons to bands such as Matchbox Twenty, Seven Mary Three and Zac Maloy of The Nixons.

His debut solo E.P., "Live at Northern Lights" is out now and was recorded at Northern Lights Recording Studio in Vancouver, Washington.

You can also check out Margolin's work in his hip hop group, Matchstick Men (music / production / singing). Don't worry, he doesn't rap. All rap / lyrics by Kevin Erwin (Quandrous).

In July of 2006, Margolin married his high school sweetheart, Jennifer. He is in his 4th year of teaching English (10th grade, 11th grade, Creative Writing) at Evergreen High School in Vancouver, Washington. He, like many others, is currently writing the Next Great American Novel.

Well, well... A show with Chris Margolin after all these years. Chris, how do you do it? Full time teaching and 4-5 gigs a week. Wow! Great to hear you play again...

I've been chomping at the bit to share the stage with Dan again, since being blown away by his set at Spring Creek Coffee House a few months back. Dan and I had a great time at the end of that evening backing each other up as we traded songs back and forth off the cuff.

If you're not familiar with Dan, here's a bit about him:

In 2006, Dan was named "Performing Songwriter of the Year" by the Portland Songwriters Association, and two of his songs took top honors in the Folk/Acoustic and Country/Americana categories of a national song contest judged by a group of distinguished insiders from the music industry.

You can check Dan and his music out at http://www.danlowemusic.com/home.

Another excellent evening sharing the stage with Portland Songwriters Association president Dan Lowe.

Great vibe, great food. The last show at Costello's was a hit, and so we're doing a repeat on March 7.

I will be sharing the stage with the lovely and talented Americana artist Jessica Stiles. You can check out music and video of Jessica at http://www.belltower-records.com/Americana.html.

Americana artist Jessica Stiles and I have been talking about teaming up again since I opened a show for her at the World Famous Kenton Club, so it was great to finally make that happen. And great too, to hear Jessica do a solo acoustic show.

Folks had a great time last summer at the Spring Creek show. The venue is intimate and comfortable, with plenty of couches and oversized chairs. It should be another fantastic evening (with several exciting guest appearances soon to be announced)... Spring Creek Coffee House is EASY to find, and CLOSE to Portland. Just head out McLoughlin Blvd. until you hit downtown Milwaukie, and look to your left. You can also click on their name above, and go to their website for a map... See you there!

P.S. You can check out photos of the last Spring Creek show at http://jamesjeffreywest.com/photos-group-18.html.

P.P.S. Great news! Dan Lowe, current president of the Portland Songwriting Association has just agreed to play a set of his masterfully crafted music as a part of the evening. You can check Dan and his music out at http://www.danlowemusic.com/home. Here's a little blip of biographical info on Dan:

Although born and raised in Alaska, like some migratory bird he ultimately left and called Washington state home for several years, before moving to Oregon where he now resides.

"I am an artist who performs predominantly original material," Dan says, "and throughout my life my focus has remained my passion for music."

In 2006, Dan was named "Performing Songwriter of the Year" by the Portland Songwriters Association, and two of his songs took top honors in the Folk/Acoustic and Country/Americana categories of a national song contest judged by a group of distinguished insiders from the music industry.

P.P.P.S. More great news. Longtime and gifted songwriter James Kehn, also a PSA regular, will be joining Dan. It should be quite an evening.

Wow, wow, wow! What a delight to share the stage with Dan Lowe. Dan is the current president of the Portland Songwriters Association, and has won Song of the Year as well as Songwriter of the Year in PSA's annual songwriting contests. His set knocked me out, and it was a blast trading tunes back and forth for the last 40 minutes of the evening. I don't get to play lead guitar as much as I'd like, and really enjoyed jamming with Dan. Can't wait to do it again...

Friends,

I'm particularly excited to get into Costello's for some music. My guitar student Ginny is a big fan of their's, and has been hounding me to book a show there. It's a really cool cafe, and if you haven't been there you ought to check it out sometime. Here's a little description from their website: "Owned and operated by the Costello family, Costello's Travel Caffé is warm, inviting, and full of character. With a vibrant, old-world atmosphere, it's not surprising that Costello's has become a neighborhood favorite and a destination within the Portland area. While the unique environment is quite distinctive, it's the great food and attentive service that have earned the loyalty of Costello's customers.
Costello's European-inspired menu includes breakfast, lunch, dinner and everywhere in between." Learn more at http://www.costellostravelcaffe.com/
See you there!

P.S. Joining us again this evening will be Laurie Howard, who will open the evening with a 30 minute set of her self-penned tunes that show off her acoustic wizardry and dynamite vocals. Check her out at http://www.myspace.com/heliosremedy.

I had a great time at Costello's, and hope to make that a regular spot. It was a treat to have Laurie Howard open the night.

The folks at Artichoke have been kind enough to give me a half-hour spot on their beautiful Artichoke Cafe stage. You can count on Friday nights at Artichoke Cafe to be entertaining and fun. Community is at the heart of our Friday night coffee houses. Our treasure trove of local talent will bring you music from the folk and world music traditions. This is the place to be whether you are on stage or in the audience. Great coffee, great service, great stage, comfortable seating. And, for a couple of hours on this Thursday evening, you'll also get some great music. Come on out and join the fun. Click their name (above) to link up to their website for directions. They're just a few minutes from downtown Portland...

Well... Sometimes you're on top of the world, and then sometimes...

Case in point: Last Friday we ran out of seating at Coffee Time. Tonight I played for three people (two of which were my parents). Actually, a few folks trickled in and out. I had a feeling that getting people out to Beaverton at 6:00 on a Thursday evening would be tough. Heck, I had trouble making the gig. Amazingly enough, I sold three CDs (thanks Justin, Sean and Jo!).

Cool venue, good vibe, good service, good tea, and comfy seating. Also, a nice stage. All-in-all, a mellow but enjoyable evening.

Always a treat to be a guest performer at Ainsworth UCC! Mum and I made our debut as a duo, performing "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" (and bringing tears to a few eyes... quite a song). We were all fired up afterwards, and went to my house to work on several more tunes. We'll bring them out this Thursday at Urban Rhythms...

And, Mom's famous chocolate chip cookies were a big hit at the going away party after church in the basement.

This a fun and cozy coffee shop located on NW 21st. I've been peeking my head in there for ages, and checking out the music, because they're right down the street from our favorite Beau Thai restaurant. I'm excited to finally get in there and play.

What an evening! There was quite a big turnout, which always makes for a lot of fun. We had enough folks that we pretty much took over the place. Coffee shops are funny, because if there's only a few people there to see the music, and everyone else is trying to study, you kind of have to tone it down and become ambiance for the evening. Not tonight. We packed the place, drew in some foot traffic as well, and had ourselves a good little time.

On a related note, I thought that I might have jinxed the evening early on. I'd heard from so many folks who were planning to come, that when I arrived to set the room up I asked how to maximize seating for a big group. Well, at 8:00 when I started playing with four people there, I thought I'd really done it to myself...

Faith Yang sat in again on bass this evening. What a treat! She caught me off guard with some hot new licks on Cat Stevens' "Don't Be Shy."

It was a kick to see a couple of my students at the show, and to also see friends of the family and coworkers who hadn't been out to one of my shows before. I also, met some fantastic folks who had come in off the street to hear the tunes (hello Gary!).

I can't wait to return to Coffee Time. The location is great. Owner Jen treats her musicians quite well. And, the folks working the counter were appreciative. I always know I've done something right when the waitstaff grooves on my show. They see a lot of stuff, and can be pretty jaded. Not these guys...

Folks had a great time last summer at the Spring Creek show, so I booked in again for this summer. The venue is intimate and comfortable, with plenty of couches and oversized chairs. It should be another fantastic evening... Spring Creek Coffee House is EASY to find, and CLOSE to Portland. Just head out McLoughlin Blvd. until you hit downtown Milwaukie, and look to your left. You can also click on their name above, and go to their website for a map... See you there!

Great, great evening! I had more fun playing than I've had in ages (and I always have fun). Michael Torrey opened the show with 30 minutes of his fabulous tunes (www.rmichaeltorrey.com), and Faith Yang joined me again on the bass guitar.

It was an interesting event for me, because I had anticipated shaking off some cobwebs after time away from performing. Instead, I felt like I played one of the best shows of my life. Go figure...

Another interesting note is that Catherine Sills, who my sister Jhen Catherine is named after, showed up for the show. She looked quite familiar, and I was positive that I recognized her from last summer's show at Spring Creek. Turns out we haven't been in the same room together since I was nine months old. Apparently, as a baby I could spend a good deal of time just gazing into the eyes of the person who was holding me. And Catherine and I had done quite a bit of this...

I can't wait for Coffee Time next week.

This should be a great evening of music. I'll be playing many of the songs from my new CD, as well as a few covers and any requests from the audience. I'll be joined on stage by a number of friends, who will be sitting in on my songs and playing their own. I've also invited my new friend Andy Simon (http://www.andysimonmusic.com/home.html) to do a 30 minute set during the evening. Spring Creek Coffee House is EASY to find, and CLOSE to Portland. Just head out McLoughlin Blvd. until you hit downtown Milwaukie, and look to your left. You can also click on their name above, and go to their website for a map... See you there!

Wow, what an excellent evening. I met so many great folks, and also had so many friends come out for the show.

Andy Simon played a great set. My sister, father & I were all talking about it afterwards. My dad bought Andy's CD. I can't wait to get a listen. In the meantime I'll just have to console myself by listening at his website (www.andysimonmusic.com/).

What a treat to share the stage with my long-time friend Faith Yang. She brought a bass guitar that looks like it came from outer space (don't ask... you really do have to see it... no description would really even begin to paint an accurate picture). I've seen Faith's band play, and she's been out to my gigs, but we finally got ourselves on the same stage. Yahoo!... Five-year-old Nolan also got in on the action, taking the stage with his Wiggles guitar. Very cool...

Great venue. Very welcoming. Ed (the owner), Patrick (the manager), and Randy (our barrista tonight) have all been such a pleasure to work with. I look forward to booking more shows at Spring Creek Coffee House (http://www.springcreekcoffee.com/). If you're looking for a good cup of coffee in Milwaukie, from a locally owned and friendly shop, you can't go wrong at Spring Creek. My Dad is a regular and turned me onto them.

Thanks everyone for making the evening a success. See you at the next one!

Some of you are familiar with Jeff Condit's photography from previous openings of his that I played at. If you haven't checked out Jeff's work, here's a very cool opportunity. From April 10-20th this year, Jeff traveled to Cuba along with 10 other American artists to take part in the Bienal de Habana. They met with Cuban artists, and created new works of their own. Jeff will be sharing this work this Friday at his studio. I will be playing guitar during the event, doing mostly instrumentals. Many of the pieces will be my own, including some that have not yet been debuted in the U.S. Drop by if you have a chance.

Wow! Jeff Condit strikes again. What a talent this guy is. It was an honor to be a part of another of his events. And, what a treat to see the work of the other artists who traveled to Cuba with Jeff...

This was a fun night of music for me as well. I've never played a fully instrumental set before. It was fun to do a couple of hours of fingerstyle and blues guitar. I was expecting to have sore fingers this morning, but actually feel fine... Can't wait for Jeff's next event!

When Loving v. Virginia was argued before the Supreme Court in 1967, 16 U.S. states still had laws prohibiting interracial marriage. This couple's victory was not only a personal triumph, but a blow struck for a more just and diverse society. And of course on a more personal note, this case paved the way for my own marriage.

Ainsworth UCC commemorates and celebrates this landmark decision and moment in history on Sunday, June 25th. Come out and join us. I will have the honor of performing my "Marry Me" song, from the new CD, which details my own proposal on stage to Kevia.

Heart and Hand,

Nottingham UK

The Raffles one-year anniversary, which was not held at Raffles. Although it was kind of a sparsely attended and mellow evening, I really enjoyed playing and was absolutely mezmerized by Russ Clark's set. Russ reminded why I get out for music in the first place. It's those undefineable and unpredictable moments of pure bliss. Those moments of listening or playing, when I'm transported. It's like that feeling of flying that feels so good in dreams, and is so hard to let go of upon waking. When the music and vibe is REALLY GOOD, when the magic is really flowing... Yeah... Thanks Russ. I don't get that often, but I sure did during your set...

Westwind Gallery hosts photographer Jeff Condit

8:00

Portland, OR

This was a wild event, for numerous reasons. First off, Westwind Gallery is located in a stunning NW Portland home. Jeff's photography looked marvelous in the gallery.

Secondly, this was the first gig I'd played in a little while after injuring myself at work (breaking up a fight...). I had to have "roadies" carry and set up my gear. It was all I could do to tune my guitar and play.

Thirdly, and most importantly, I had understood that I would be playing an hour or two of music while folks milled about taking in Jeff's amazing photos (http://www.jeffcondit.com/detail/). In actuality, when 8:00 p.m. rolled around, the studio owner set up 30 or so chairs in the main room, placed a small lamp next to my seat up front, turned off all other lighting, gave a very nice introduction, and then turned me loose. Wow! Talk about being on the spot (especially in my tender condition). But, as tends to be the case, once I strummed that first chord I was off and running...
